Amen to "A World Free of Nuclear Weapons"

Amen to A World Free of Nuclear Weapons (WSJ, January 4, 2007). Amen means a solemn ratification and hearty approval of the world-changing proposals expressed in the article.

Amen is also the acronym for a recently announced organization "Nuclear A.M.E.N.". Nuclear Alerts Must End Now, established with the goal of achieving the first step in the Journal article - "Changing the Cold War posture of deployed nuclear weapons..."

The reality behind that rather opaque language is the constant maintenance by the United States and Russia of thousands of nuclear weapons on hair-trigger war alert. Today, both the U.S. and Russia could launch attacks, literally within minutes, which would destroy civilization itself. No national leader in the U.S. or Russia can possibly argue that this utterly reckless nuclear weapons war alert is what their citizens want.

Nuclear A.M.E.N. will work to end the war alert status of all nuclear weapons on Earth. It will pursue that goal by petitioning every member of the United States Congress to adopt legislation directing the U.S. government to enter into immediate negotiations with Russia to reach an agreement for a phased, mutual elimination of the current war alert of nuclear weapons.

Ending nuclear weapons war alerts will provide a vast increase in the security of every person on Earth and it is the indispensable first step to a world free of nuclear weapons.
